NSS is a scheme sponsored by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Government of India. NSS was introduced in India in 1969 on 24th September to commemorate the birth centenary of Mahatma Gandhi. The scheme has around 35 lakh volunteers all over India. The Scheme was introduced in Puducherry in 1976. It was extended to Colleges, Polytechnic Colleges and Higher Secondary Schools. At present, the Union Territory has around 20 thousand volunteers in 200 institutions. Kanchi Mamunivar Centre for Postgraduate Studies (KMCPGS) has one unit with 100 volunteers. The activities of NSS are broadly divided into regular activities and special camping activities. Under regular activities, various community-based programmes are undertaken both in the campus and in the adopted villages. These activities include literary, health, environmental and other programmes. Special camping programmes involve 50 students and are organized for a period of seven days in the adopted village. The NSS unit of KMCPGS has adopted Navarkulam village for the last 3 years. The following are the major activities organized by the NSS at this Centre during the academic year 2011-2012.
