About our Department
The Department of History was started offering Masters Degree in 1991. M.Phil. in History was offered from the Academic Year 2002-2003. CBCS system was introduced for Masters Degree from the Academic Year 2012-13 and for M.Phil. Degree from the Academic Year 2013-14. Now, as per the latest UGC guidelines, the M.Phil degree has been scrapped.
Our Objectives are to appraise the students the true past of the Mankind in historical context; to inculcate the values and virtues of Indian culture; to foster the feeling of nationalism and patriotism among the future generation; to encourage Research in History with special reference to the History of Pondicherry and to motivate and orient students to get through UGC (NET) and other Competitive Examinations
Our mission is conducting Seminars, Conferences, Workshops, Lectures and Discussions to appraise on various historical topics and contemporary trends; to cultivate the feeling of nationalism by highlighting the noble sacrifices of the patriots; to conduct coaching classes for UGC (NET) and other Competitive examinations; to equip the Department with more Research oriented Books and to subscribe for more journals to conduct objective oriented History and giving importance to regional History and integrating with national History particularly national movement.

Major Facilities Available in the Department
The Department of History has been set up modernized classroom for MA and M.Phil degree. The program has been offered with computer, LCD projector and white board. The effective teaching methods like PPTs. The second MA class room has smart classroom with overhead projector.
